RipCurl STEW to serve as trails for O’Neill CWC

The Rip Curl Stew is slated to go for June 5 and 6 at Cox Bay in Tofino BC this year.

“The top two finishers in the Rip Curl Stew will receive entry into the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada main event, with all the remaining surfers being seeded according to their standings at the Stew,” said O’Neill spokesperson Marc Fuller. “If the full field of 144 is not realized by the closing date, those seeded surfers from the Stew will gain entry into the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada according to their placing in the Stew.”

This sounds like a good idea as it may, depending on how well they surf in the Stew, allow for more Canadians to make it into the O’Neill CWC. If the full field (under 142) or less show up, there’s a good chance we’ll see more locals in the comp since the spots will be open.  However, the CWC being a 6-star event, it’s hard to say that most of the international surfer’s wont’ be showing up!

This month the province is holding public consultations with regards to ongoing coastal policy development and the province’s State of the Coast Report.

New Product: Soma Airbag

Click n' blow to enlarge

I saw this product and was taken away by it’s innovation so it’s worth mentioning here on ScotiaSurfer.com. For anyone who has had the headache of you board being dinged up by donut-eating luggage handlers, this could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

Introducing the Soma Airbag by Soma Designs. First off, I can’t help but think, “Why didn’t I come up with this?” So what is it?

It’s basically an air-filled board bag. It has ribbed air chambers that displace the energy from a direct impact more evenly so your board doesn’t even feel it. There’s an air chamber running the perimeter of the bag, foam on the inside and the nose and tail are reinforced. It comes in two sizes 6’6” and 7” and I hear that there’s more versions on the way. Travel Report: Nicaragua Update

Next Left, more pics.

One of our local surfers headed down to Nicaragua for some sun and surf.  Good choice considering it’s nearly impossible to get both at the same time here in Canada.

In case you were thinking about heading down she emailed us some important information about Playa Madera just north of San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua.  Where things have changed, for the better!

Here’s what she had to say:

“…(I) ended up staying right at the main beach break at “los Tres Hermosos”.  This was the kind of set up I was looking for as I was traveling solo and didn’t have much time I just wanted to park myself somewhere, watch surf, chill in a hammock, eat good food, drink good beer and surf!

I had a room to myself for $10 US a day, rented a board for $8 a day and could get breakfast, lunch, beer and water from downstairs. Read More…

O’Neill Cold Water Classic Returns to Canada

Following the resounding success of the inaugural Cold Water Classic Series blending adventure, exploration, surf and competition, the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series makes a much-anticipated return for 2010.

Last year saw the series push the boundaries of surfing in a way never seen before with five ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) events exploring spectacular surf spots throughout remote corners of the globe with the word’s best surfers competing for the prestige of winning the O’Neill CWC Series and the $50,000 prize money.

“It’s pretty much the next best thing to winning the ASP World Title,” says World Tour star Jordy Smith.

It’s not only the prize money and accolade, but the integration of exploration and adventure into surf competitions that the surfers themselves relish. Read More…
